Abstract
Ninety-two electrocardiograms obtained from 60 cases of diphtheria were analysed and the results were compared according to the duration of illness, as well us before and after treatment.
Abnormal tracings were noted in 38.3% of cases on admission. Among the major abnormalities, ST segment and T wave changes were noted in 13.3%,right ventricular hypertrophy in 10.0% , left ventri cular hypertrophy in 8.3% , atrioventricular block in 5.0% and incomplete bundle branch block also in5.0%.
The incidence of ST segment ana T wave changes in those treated with antitoxin and antibiotics was only 6.7% , whereas it was, as high as 33.3% inthose not treated. However, no significant difference was seen in the incidences of the other abnormal findings between treated and non-treated groups.
Prolongation of P-R interval and changes in ST segment and T wave showed rather early improvement but time of disappearance of incomplete bundle branch block and ventricular hypertrophy were variable.
